Peru & Bolivia Discovery (16 Days)
Sixteen days from Lima’s food scene to Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni Salt Flats, with the PeruRail Titicaca train, Tiwanaku and stargazing in Uyuni.
The historic centre, Miraflores and Barranco with local guides, a food tour and the desert coast of Paracas
Lima is where most journeys to Peru begin. The capital founded by the Spanish in 1535 sits on cliffs above the Pacific, with a historic centre that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, pre-Inca pyramids in the middle of the city, the seaside districts of Miraflores and Barranco and, above all, a food scene that has made it one of the great culinary capitals of the world.
We include Lima in our journeys through Peru, usually for two nights at the start or the end of the trip. Your days include transfers, a half-day city tour with a local guide and a gastronomy walking tour in Barranco, and some journeys add a full day on the desert coast of Paracas and Huacachina.

| Day | What you do | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Arrival | Private transfer from Jorge Chávez airport to your hotel | A first evening on the clifftops of Miraflores, facing the Pacific |
| City tour | A half-day private tour with a local guide | A panoramic stop at Huaca Pucllana, a pre-Inca pyramid in Miraflores; Plaza San Martín and Plaza de Armas, with the Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Archbishop’s Palace; the San Francisco convent and its catacombs; and the ocean views of the Parque del Amor |
| Food walk | A Peruvian gastronomy walking tour in Barranco | Around fourteen Peruvian flavours, with the history and culture behind each dish |
| Paracas and Huacachina | A full day on the desert coast, in some of our journeys | A boat trip to the Ballestas Islands, past the Candelabro geoglyph, with sea lions, Humboldt penguins and seabirds; a pisco tasting at an Ica winery; and a dune buggy ride and sandboarding at the Huacachina oasis |

Peruvian cooking mixes Andean, Spanish, African, Chinese and Japanese traditions, and Lima is the place to taste it all: ceviche at lunchtime, causa and lomo saltado, anticuchos from a street grill, the Japanese-Peruvian Nikkei cuisine and the Chinese-Peruvian chifa, and a pisco sour to finish. The city is also home to some of the most celebrated restaurants in the world: Maido was named the World’s Best Restaurant in 2025, and Central held the title in 2023.

| Time | Plan | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Two nights | Arrival, then the city tour and the Barranco food walk. This is the plan of most of our journeys, before flying to Cusco or the Amazon. | Seeing the essentials and recovering from a long flight |
| Three nights | Add the full day to Paracas, the Ballestas Islands and the Huacachina oasis | Wildlife and the desert, without a separate trip |
| Four nights or more | Add the Larco Museum, a cooking class with a market visit, or a night at Paracas instead of the long day trip | Food lovers and a slower pace |
Lima is at sea level, so it is an easy place to start before the altitude of Cusco and the Sacred Valley. From Lima we fly you to Cusco, to Puerto Maldonado for the Amazon, or on to the rest of South America.

Lima is a desert city where it almost never rains. Summer, from December to April, brings warm, sunny days and beach weather on the coast; from June to October a layer of low cloud covers the city, with cool, humid days and a fine mist called garúa. The good news is that the grey months in Lima are the dry, sunny season in the Andes and at Machu Picchu:
| Month | High / low | Sunshine | Our verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| January | 26.8 / 20.4 °C | 185 h | Excellent: summer, sunny and warm |
| February | 28.0 / 21.0 °C | 166 h | Excellent: the warmest month; beach season |
| March | 27.6 / 20.5 °C | 189 h | Excellent: warm and sunny |
| April | 25.4 / 18.7 °C | 182 h | Very good: the end of summer |
| May | 22.8 / 17.3 °C | 113 h | Mild; the grey season begins |
| June | 20.5 / 16.6 °C | 45 h | Grey skies and a fine mist, the garúa |
| July | 19.6 / 15.9 °C | 36 h | Cool and grey, but the best season in the Andes |
| August | 19.2 / 15.4 °C | 29 h | The greyest month; bring a light sweater |
| September | 19.6 / 15.3 °C | 35 h | Cool and grey; spring begins in the Andes |
| October | 20.8 / 16.0 °C | 60 h | The sun starts to return |
| November | 22.4 / 17.1 °C | 103 h | Very good: brighter and mild |
| December | 24.4 / 18.6 °C | 130 h | Very good: summer arrives |
