First Place! Maido, the restaurant led by ‘Micha’ Tsumura, makes history by topping The World’s 50 Best 2025. “Our dream is to make people happy,” said the chef.
Maido has been named the best restaurant in the world according to The World’s 50 Best 2025. The acclaimed Peruvian establishment, located in Miraflores and headed by Mitsuharu ‘Micha’ Tsumura, claimed the top spot on the prestigious global culinary list.

In a joyful and emotional moment, the Maido team took the stage at The World’s 50 Best awards ceremony, held on Thursday, June 19 in Turin, Italy, to receive the long-awaited recognition. “Thank you so much,” said a visibly moved Micha Tsumura, who waved to the cheering audience as he accepted the honor with his team.
“Please, Maido team—I know you’re watching this, this is for you. This also goes out to my family, my father, my sister. Thank you so much,”
Micha introduced his team members: César (Choy), Marjorie (Flores), and Mariana. “We’re all in this together,” he added.
He went on to reflect on Maido’s mission as it nears its 16th anniversary:
“Our dream has never been about winning awards, but about making people happy, about offering genuine hospitality. I believe gastronomy, food, and hospitality can do incredible things—make dreams come true and even solve problems that seem impossible to fix.”
Maido Named Best Restaurant in South America in 2025
Maido was not only named the best restaurant in the world by The World’s 50 Best 2025—just moments earlier, the Peruvian Nikkei restaurant also earned the title of Best Restaurant in South America, securing both top honors for which it was nominated.
Maido Rises Four Spots from The World’s 50 Best 2024
Maido climbed four positions from its previous rank in The World’s 50 Best 2024. Founded in 2009, the restaurant had already reached the top 5 last year.
In 2024, the Spanish restaurant Disfrutar—led by Eduard Xatruch, Mateu Casañas, and Oriol Castro—topped the list. It was followed by Asador Etxebarri (Spain) in second place, Table by Bruno Verjus (France) in third, and DiverXO by Dabiz Muñoz (Spain) in fourth.
Other Peruvian Restaurants in The World’s 50 Best 2025
In addition to Maido’s historic win, three other Peruvian restaurants were recognized in this year’s edition, strengthening Lima’s reputation as a global culinary capital:
- Kjolle (Ranked #9): Led by chef Pía León, known for her focus on native and sustainable ingredients.
- Mérito (Ranked #26): A Venezuelan-Peruvian fusion spot led by chef Juan Luis Martínez, known for its creative cuisine.
- Mayta (Ranked #39): Headed by chef Jaime Pesaque, offering a refined experience blending contemporary techniques with local products.
This recognition not only celebrates Maido but also underscores the growing impact of Latin American cuisine on the global culinary scene.
